The Internet is filled with unauthorized copies of many
copyrighted works, technically in violation of international
law. For example, our essay "What is the New Age?"
has been pirated by several well-known web sites. Laws
generally allow a person to quote text from works copyrighted by
others as long as the quotation is sufficiently short. We have
seen 400 and 500 words as commonly used upper limits on size,
beyond which permission to duplicate from the owner of the
copyright should be sought.
Our use of copyrighted material - Fair use notice:
We often use copyrighted material in our web site's essays.
This use may not have been specifically authorized by the
copyright owner. Such material is made available on a no-charge
basis for educational and discussion purposes only. We believe
this constitutes a 'fair use' of any such copyrighted material
as provided for in U.S. federal law17 USC § 107. (We cite U.S.
law because over 90% of our site visitors are from the U.S.)
No copyright claimed in works of any federal, state,
provincial government or the United Nations which has been
included in our web site. Copyright is not claimed for material
written by other than NACC personnel. The material is protected
under the 1995 Berne Convention covering International Copyright
laws. All rights are reserved. However, we grant the following
privileges:
Hard copies: Please feel free to make up to 50 hard
copies each of up to five essays or parts of essays:
If it is for your own personal, non-commercial use; or
If for a non-profit or educational organization.
We ask that you include the copyright notice and our site's
URL on each copy.
Discussion group posting: If you wish to personally
post the text of one of our essays to an Internet discussion
groups, including groups maintained by commercial sites such
as AOL, MS, Juno, Prodigy, etc. we grant permission to quote
part or all of one essay, as long as acknowledgment of the
source (and our URL) is included.
Copying an essay to your web site: You may copy up
to 500 words from any of our essays without contacting us
for permission. We may grant permission for you to copy one
or more of our essays to another web site.
